What the UK can learn from Germany's balcony solar boom
29 August 2026 · Guide
Germany went first
Germany simplified its plug-in solar rules in early 2024. Within 12 months, more than 1.2 million households had installed a plug-in system - and around 500,000 units a year were still being added in 2025.
Why it took off
- Low cost of entry - basic kits cost a few hundred euros
- No installer needed - plug in and go
- Renter-friendly - balcony mounting means no structural changes
- Clear rules - once the regulation was simple, the market exploded
What UK buyers should copy
German buyers overwhelmingly bought kits with microinverters and favour expandable systems they can upgrade with a battery later. The same brands - EcoFlow, Anker SOLIX and others - are now arriving in the UK.
What UK buyers should watch for
- UK-specific plugs and approval - make sure the kit is sold for the UK market (BS 1363 plug)
- Warranty - panels typically last 25+ years; check the inverter warranty too
- Retailer stock - the market opened on 27 August 2026, so supply is ramping up
If the German curve repeats in the UK, plug-in solar will be one of the fastest home energy upgrades this decade - and early adopters get the longest payback window.
